Promising laboratory method for iNDF

Indigestible NDF (iNDF) is one of the most sensitive variables in the NorFor model, when optimizing diets to cattle. The reference method for analyzing iNDF is ruminal in sacco incubation for 288 hours. It is a time-consuming and expensive analysis. Therefore NorFor provides a sample bank of several hundred roughage samples for calibration of NIR-instruments in commercial laboratories. Researchers in Sweden and Denmark are busy developing a laboratory method for analyzing iNDF. One of the most promising methods is an in vitro method with rumen fluid. Results show a good correlation between the in vitro and the in sacco method.
