NorFor can optimize feed
rations for beef cows

The dairy cow model in NorFor has been further developed to also include beef cows. Thus, it is now possible to make economic optimizations of feed rations for beef cows in a similar way as for dairy cows. Standard optimization of diets for beef cows includes economy, energy and intake capacity as well as nutrients such as protein (AAT & PBV), minerals and rumen load index.

In NorFor the mobilization (loss of BCS) in early lactation is lower for beef cows than for dairy cows, as is the deposition that is assumed to take place from 71-300 DIM. A beef cow produce around 8 kg milk per day at 100 DIM and weighs around 700 kg, but there are large differences between breeds. NorFor includes data for 19 beef breeds. Each breed has its own milk production, live weight and weight per body condition score that is used in the mobilization and deposition calculations.
